Computers and Computing

My first computer arrived on the scene at the end of 1992. I had been waiting for one for a very long time. Anyway, the dealer set the computer up, handed me a few books and said not to bother with them, they'd be no use to me at all. That's like handing a red rag to a bull. I looked at them straight away - found not very much I could understand - most was like a foreign language to me. However, I did spot some things that later became most useful. It was not a very long time later that I found that I wanted to know about the how's and why's of what was happening in that machine I was using so much.

I soon had my home finances, my music database and certainly much correspondence being worked at on the computer. Of course, there were the games which my children were thoroughly enjoying.

After a year and some advice about doing some study before lookingmy boxes for work, I found myself doing a desktop publishing course. The project we had to complete was to design a suite of products: letterhead, business card and flyer. "My boxes" were created to be the graphic on those products.

Just before that course ended (it was a 9 week course), I enrolled in the local TAFE College to learn programming. (That is something I had wanted to do from when I left school about 20 something years before). Those studies ended up with me gaining the Associate Diploma in Microcomputing.

I decided then that I should attend university. I have completed my Bachelor of Computing (Information Management) course, and am now doing an honours year which will result in B.Sc(Honours)(Computer Science & Information Systems). Perhaps you can tell by now that I do enjoy studying! Deakin University: University of the Year 1999-2000
